Build a Natural Outer Ear with Advanced Reconstruction Surgery

Microtia is a condition present from birth where one or both outer ears do not develop fully. It can range from a slightly smaller ear to a complete absence of the outer ear. Along with affecting how the ear looks, microtia often comes with a narrow or closed ear canal, which can affect hearing too. Microtia reconstruction surgery is focused on building a real, natural looking ear that blends in with the rest of the face.

Dr. Sushrut Kalra provides specialized microtia reconstruction surgery in Jaipur, with treatment planned around the child's age, growth, and ear structure. Using advanced surgical techniques, the goal is to build a permanent, naturally shaped ear while keeping the child's safety and healthy development at the center of every decision.

Understanding Microtia

  • What Causes Microtia Microtia happens early in pregnancy, when the tissue that forms the outer ear does not develop the way it normally would.
  • One Ear or Both Ears Microtia usually affects just one ear, though in some cases it can affect both.
  • Different Levels of Severity Microtia is grouped into different levels, ranging from a smaller ear with a narrow canal to a small skin tag, or in rare cases, no visible ear at all.
  • Helping With School Age Confidence Reconstructing the outer ear before a child starts middle school can help prevent teasing and emotional stress during those years.
  • Hearing Loss in the Affected Ear Many children with microtia have some hearing loss on the affected side, since the ear canal or middle ear may not have developed properly.
  • The Right Time for Surgery Surgery is planned around the child's chest growth, emotional readiness, and how symmetrical the face looks with the ear in place.
  • Creating a Natural Ear Shape The goal of surgery is to recreate the natural folds, earlobe, and shadow of a real ear, so it matches the other side closely.
  • Surgery in Planned Stages Building a detailed, natural looking ear takes a few careful surgical stages, with healing time built in between each one.

Questions about appointments

Microtia happens randomly during early pregnancy and is usually not hereditary. In most cases, it isn't linked to anything the mother did or didn't do during pregnancy.

The best age is usually between 8 and 10 years. By this age, the healthy ear is close to full adult size, giving surgeons an accurate template, and the child's rib cartilage has grown enough to build the new ear framework.

Yes, it commonly causes hearing loss because the ear canal is often blocked or missing. The inner ear nerve is usually healthy though, which is why an early hearing evaluation helps decide if a hearing aid or bone anchored device is needed.

The most trusted method is rib cartilage reconstruction, where small pieces of the child's own rib cartilage are shaped into a new ear frame. Another option is a synthetic framework called Medpor, which is covered using the patient's own scalp tissue.

Using the rib cartilage method, reconstruction usually needs 2 to 3 stages, spaced a few months apart. The first stage places the cartilage framework under the skin, and later stages lift the ear and shape the natural areas behind it.

If built using the child's own rib cartilage, the ear has its own blood supply and will grow slightly along with the face. A synthetic framework does not grow, which is why careful timing and sizing matter before choosing this option.
